Nicopolis - Ancient Ruins North of Preveza Town

On Friday, Sept 27th we spent the morning going over to the Marina where we will haul out to have a look and rent a car.

We actually got there by a new tunnel which goes under the canal and was just finished in 2010.

After our errands, we took the scooter about 3 miles north of Preveza to find the ancient ruins of Nicopolis.

They are very old, built in 28 BC by the Romans.  Nicopolis means "City of Victory" and was built by Octavian to commemorate the successful unification of the Roman Empire.

The ruins are quite interesting to see and as always it is astounding how good they were at architecture and construction.

Sadly, it is clear that the Greek government has tryed to preserve and rebuild some of the ruins in order to maintain them but have run out of funds.

There was an old amphitheatre which was right on the side of the main road which was something to see!  It was about a kilometer north of the main city of Nicopolis!

After our exploration, we returned back to the boat and enjoyed a stroll through the pedestrian market in Preveza after dinner.

Even though we are preparing to haul out and leave, we are still really enjoying exploring Greece!

The first of two Mosaics in the Nicopolis Ruins

      The Detail was amazing!

Taking the chance to sit on a Roman Column!

                The Second Mosaic

                Really pretty!

  Looking into the City

One of the few pieces explaining the Ruins

These were known as 'Barrel' buildings due to the curvature of the walls and ceilings

The Amphitheatre - In Disrepair but really interesting

Olives almost ready to be harvested

View into the large bay at Preveza

  The ancient Walls of Nicopolis

Just outside the wall - Good look at how they were constructed.  Did you know the Romans invented Concrete?

Strolling the Market Street of Preveza - Lovely Church at the end

More of the Pedestrian Market at Preveza It is so quiet during the day and comes alive each evening!
