Rock and Roll in Zankithos Harbour

We returned to the boat for a quiet evening after having dinner in Zankithos.

After a couple of episodes of the Soprano's we turned in for the night.

Very soon after going to bed, we realized we would not sleep much as the rollers were starting to form and they were hitting us on the side.  They continued to increase as time went by but we were forced to stay with our choice for the night.

We tried sleeping sideways to no avail and at 5:30am in the pitch dark Rob had had enough and we pulled anchor and started motoring up and down the coast hoping to find a better anchorage.

At this point we understood why we were the only boat choosing to anchor outside the protected harbour!

After cruising up and down the coast, the wind rose as did the waves.  As the sun rose, we decided to head south to the large bay of Lagana which looked like it would give us the protection we would need and we had hoped to visit there as well.

Lagana Bay is at the very south end of Zankithos.  The Bay is very large sprawling over 7 nautical miles across.  It is most famous for the nesting grounds of the Carretta - The Loggerhead Turtle.

Over 80% of the entire population of Loggerhead Turtles in the entire Mediterranean nest here so it is a very important place.  They lay their eggs on the beaches in June, July and August and head back out to the Adriatic.

We toured to the south west corner to get respite from the weather and tucked under a nice cliff.  We were anchored by 1:30 and very tired having had no sleep so we chose to nap and catch up.

We heard that there were a set of caves nearby on the Keri Penninsula so I did some research on them and we hoped to see them in the morning.

We headed into a small village called Keri where we enjoyed a nice dinner and then back to The Lodge and off to bed!
