Touring Rome with Mackenzie - Piazza's and the Coloseum

I travelled from Montenegro to Rome to meet Mackenzie on June 29, 2013.

It is about an hour and 10 minutes from Montenegro by plane so not too far.

Mackenzie arrived at around 2pm the following day and we hit the ground running.  After checking into the Rome Park Mariott, we took the hotel shuttle to Rome and started our tour of historical sites, eating, and drinking.

We saw Piazza Navona and stopped in Campo dei Fiori for lunch.

The following day we walked for 4 hours and then took a 3 hour tour of the Palatine, Forum, and Coliseum.  It was quite hot but well worth the effort and we learned many interesting things along the way.

The weather was lovely and it was a great start to our tour.

Mackenzie on the bridge at Ponte Saint Angelo with the St Pietro Basilica in the background.  Great start to seeing Rome for the first time!

   The fountains at Piazza Navona

Cappuccino at Baccanale restaurant in Campo dei Fiori which is famous for the markets you see in the background

                The Coloseum!!!

                The Forum and Palatine

A roman temple built in honour of a son who died quite young.  Roman Temples were not religious places but rather public meeting places during their time.

Just inside the gates of the Coloseum.  The gates are numbered with roman bumberals on the outside and there are 80 of them.  It is much like the large modern stadiums of today.

Inside the Coloseum.  The animals were kept below. (Floor is missing)  They were raised up into the stadium using an elaborate pulley system.  You can see some seats of marble in the centre left of the photo near the back.  Picture this whole place filled with beautiful marble seats.

Dinner at Ditta Trinchetti, a fabulous restaurant in Trastevere which is a great neighborhood in Rome. It is known for its dining and is half locals and half tourists like us.  Happy Canada Day!!!

                Pasta anyone?

   A good motto ....
