Sail Around Mljet - Swimmimg in Odysseus' Cave
On Friday morning, July 13, we left Prozura and headed south around the bottom of the island of Mljet and up around the sea side.
We headed north hoping to find Odysseus' Cave about half way up the island.
There were no clear directions so it was a bit of a gamble.
About 4 hours into it, we found it. This is a very Long Island! There were a few people on the rocks at its entrance so we thought we would get closer and we were successful!
It was 90 feet deep so we could not anchor. Rob was kind and hovered the boat while Mackenzie and I took the paddle board and ventured inside.
WOW!!
This was well worth the trouble to get here!
The story goes that Odysseus shipwrecked here hence the name of the cave. He thought it was as beautiful as Calypso ( a nymph whom he fell in love with) and apparently is believed to have stayed here for 7 years.
The most incredible views and amazing colours in the water.
After our visit at the caves we moved along, concerned we would not find a good place with shelter to anchor for the night.
As we approached the top of Mljet, Rob spotted a cove. No boats but it looked safe.
We motored in ( we motor everywhere as there is no wind here!) and it looked good.
We had a fabulous dinner - pesto pasta w truffles and chicken. We watched some Family Guy episodes and enjoyed a wonderful sunset followed by some excellent star gazing.
Entrance to Odysseus' Cave - not so simple to find as there are many places along the shore where the rocks are carved out
